The table
All 172 countries in the draw.
The game’s birthplace draw is not a uniform lottery. This is the full table behind it: birth share, odds, life expectancy, under-5 mortality and income for every country and territory in the build. Search it, sort it, or download it.
A table with a very sharp shape.
The median country is tiny in the draw. The average baby is not born in the median country. Both facts are true at once.
Field Guide calculations Median of the 172 published shares; birth-weighted life expectancy and under-5 mortality = Σ(share × value) ÷ 100. Snapshot 27 October 2026. These are summaries of the game’s table, not additional game data.
Income buys years, but the spread is wide.
Each circle is a country. The horizontal axis is income per person on a log scale; the vertical axis is life expectancy. Circle size is the country’s share of births.
Each point is one of the game’s 172 countries. Position is life expectancy and income; circle size is the country’s share of births. The pattern is a correlation, not a promise about any one life. Data: official 172-country table, snapshot 27 October 2026.
Read this as a description The plot shows the association in this table. It is not a causal claim, and it does not predict any individual life. A country can sit above or below the trend for reasons the two axes do not capture.
Search, filter, sort — or take the data with you.
The table is rendered from the same dataset the calculators use. The CSV is the same 172 rows, ready for a spreadsheet.

Snapshot The table was copied from the game’s public 172-country page on 27 October 2026. The game cites UN World Population Prospects 2024, UN IGME and the World Bank. “GDP per person” is purchasing-power parity, in today’s prices, as the game displays it.
The average country is not the average baby.
A simple average treats Malta and India as equally important. A birth-weighted average treats each baby as one. The game’s draw uses the second kind of weight, and the difference is large.
| Measure | Average country | Average baby’s country |
|---|---|---|
| Life expectancy at birth | 73.2 years | 70.2 years |
| Under-5 mortality | 2.62% | 3.84% |
| GDP per person (PPP) | $25,561 | $14,467 |
Method “Average country” is the unweighted mean of the 172 rows. “Average baby’s country” weights each row by its share of births. Both are our calculations from the game’s published table. The gap is the point: a birth-weighted world is younger, poorer and more exposed to early death than a country-weighted one.
Six columns, six different questions.
The table is not a ranking of countries. Each column answers a different question, and the answers do not have to agree.
- Share of births: the country’s weight in the babies-born-now draw.
- Odds: the game’s rounded “1 in N” version of that share.
- Region: the grouping used on the game’s country pages, useful for aggregation but not a verdict about the place.
- Life expectancy: the country’s overall figure at birth, not a promise for the character.
- Under-5 deaths: the share of children who die before five, as a percentage.
- GDP per person: purchasing-power parity, in today’s prices; a context number, not the character’s income.
Questions about the table
What does the 172-country table show?
For each country in the game, it shows the share of births, the rounded odds, life expectancy at birth, the chance of dying before age five and GDP per person in purchasing-power terms. The game uses these shares to weight the birthplace draw.
Is this table the game’s live data?
It is a snapshot taken on 27 October 2026 from the game’s public country page. The game can update its data. Check the official country table for the current version.
Why is the birth-weighted life expectancy lower than the simple average?
Births are concentrated in younger, lower-income countries, so the country of the average baby has a lower life expectancy than the average country. The two numbers answer different questions: the average place versus the average birth.
What does “1 in N” mean in the odds column?
It is the game’s rounded expression of the country’s share of births. India at 17.60% is about 1 in 6. It is the weight in the birthplace draw, not a prediction about an individual life.
Can I download the table?
Yes. The Download CSV link exports all 172 rows with the country name, ISO3 code, region, birth share, odds, life expectancy, under-5 mortality, GDP per person and the official country page link.
Why are some countries at 0.00%?
The game rounds the displayed share to two decimal places. A country with a very small share can display as 0.00% while still having a non-zero weight. The odds column shows the more precise “1 in N” value.
